Canterbury, Dylan
A graduate of the jazz studies program at SUNY Purchase, Dylan Canterbury began playing trumpet at age 8 and was already playing professionally in high school. While at Purchase, he studied privately with jazz trumpet legends Jon Faddis, Jim Rotondi and Ray Vega, and had an opportunity to interact with several other notables such as saxophonists Steve Wilson, Jon Gordon and Jimmy Greene, pianists Hal Galper, Pete Malinverni and Charles Blenzig, bassist Todd Coolman and drummer John Riley.
Since graduation, Canterbury has worked with a wide range of notable musicians, including Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, the All-Star O'Rourkestra, and the Smoke Big Band. He has had the opportunity to share the stage with greats such as trumpeters Jon Faddis and Joe Magnarelli, saxophonists Gary Smulyan and Ralph Lalama, pianist Noah Haidu and vocalist Cyrille Aimee.
Canterbury is also an acclaimed composer, arranger, and transcriber. Working for ejazzlines, Canterbury has over 20 published transcriptions for sale and has edited countless other scores from some of jazz's most important composers. His compositions, arrangements and transcriptions have been performed or recorded by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, legendary bassist Dave Holland, and the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra.
Actively involved in education, Canterbury is an adjunct member of the faculty of the Schenectady County Community College School of Music, where he teaches jazz history, and has also conducted clinics and master classes at several local schools. In addition, he also teaches trumpet and composition/arranging privately to students of all ages and ability levels.
