A lush, moody tone poem-type piece rife with dense harmonies, "River" is an extended tenor saxophone feature that will be a wonderful vehicle for your modern-inclined soloist. A brass chorale provides the setting for a counter-line in left hand piano, bass, and bass clarinet at the top. Most of the ensemble work is designed to be supportive of the tenor solo, but should also have a warm identity of its own. As the title implies, the arrangement naturally ebbs and flows all the way to a strong climax near the end. Although there are no overly difficult rhythmic or speedy figures, intonation and dynamic balance are of utmost importance. Tenor saxophone is the featured soloist. Trumpets 3 and 4 double on flugelhorn. Baritone saxophone doubles on bass clarinet, but an alternate, no double part has been included as well.
