JULY NOTES: New this month are three more from the Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book album, all arranged by Buddy Bregman. The newest is 'All of You.' This arrangement distills the tune down to its simplest, most melodically inviting form. It's also a good chance to give your sax and trumpet sections a break during live performances, as the accompanying ensemble consists of only four trombones and rhythm section (see the contents tab). We also have 'I Love Paris.' The strings set the tone of this arrangement before giving way to a colla voce section where the vocalist sings the verse (accompanied by the keyboard player). The strings re-enter for the chorus with a few cameos by the woodwinds (flute and oboe). The strings get a chance to shine during the instrumental section evoking Rachmaninoff's string writing of the early 20th Century. Earlier this month we published another from these sessions, 'Begin the Beguine.'
We have another from Tony Bennett via Robert Farnon, 'Winter Wonderland.' This holiday favorite was recorded by Mr. Bennett in 1968. Farnon's magical score provides a lush background for your vocalist. There is a four bar cameo tenor saxophone solo, but it is otherwise a vocal feature. The vocal key is Eb. This publication was prepared from the original set of parts used during the 1968 recording session - this is not a transcription.
New from the Glenn Miller Orchestra is 'A String of Carols' as written by Dave Wolpe. This delightful holiday medley appeared on the Glenn Miller Orchestra's album In the Nutcracker Mood.
The above publications were prepared from the original scores and/or sets of parts used during the recording sessions - these are not transcriptions.
MORE ALFRED PUBLISHING 2024 NEW ISSUES: We have brand new charts from favorites Gordon Goodwin and Alan Baylock. From Mr. Goodwin we have 'Terminally Hip,' a clever swinging-and yes, hip!-treatment of a catchy tune. From Mr. Baylock we have 'The Upsweep,' a very funky rock chart with a driving groove. Both of these are highly recommended; see below for full info as well as score and sound video and samples. Please click here to view all 2024 Alfred Publishing New Issues.
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: June New Arrangements pages introduced our first chart that Bill Doggett wrote for Ella Fitzgerald, 'After You've Gone.' This is from the record Rhythm is My Business which was something different from what Ella was recording at the time; free-wheeling, exuberant, and joyous. She and Norman Granz had been looking for a less formal setting that would really encourage Ella to stretch out, and Mr. Doggett was the ideal man for the job. He had an incredible career in rock and roll as well as R&B; please click here to read more about this singular American musical figure.
We also recently released Wayne Shorter compositions as arranged by members of and recorded by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Please click here for all nine, available in traditional paper or PDF download form, along with a discounted complete set of them all.
SPECIALLY-PRICED MULTI-CHART SET NEWS: We have three brand new specially-priced multi-chart sets right below, and a newly updated one. First off is a set of nine arrangements from Quincy Jones, which is a fabulous window into the early years of one of America's great musical minds. Count Basie had close and highly productive relationships with several great arrangers, and we have a new set from Mr. Basie and Billy Byers to highlight their collaborations. And we have a set of Freddie Hubbard tunes arranged by six different arrangers, providing a very diverse interpretation of the compositions of one of jazz's great trumpeters. Finally, we have updated our Andrews Sisters set to include our recent publication of their version of 'Sing, Sing, Sing.'
