FEBRUARY NOTES: (February 20th Update): Today we have added to our site three more from Jason "Spicy G" Goldman, so we now offer all six nonet arrangements from his brilliant 2001 debut LP, The Definitive Standard.
We are very pleased to present two more brand new releases from Oliver Nelson, courtesy of our close friend Oliver Jr. Originally performed on his 1960 album Screamin' the Blues, Oliver Nelson would record an updated version of Three Seconds on his 1975 album Stolen Moments. This arrangement is based on the latter, which features an expanded instrumentation, background figures, and a shout chorus not present on the earlier version. We also have There's a Yearnin'. According to Nelson's liner notes, the full title of this movement should read "There's a yearnin' deep inside me." This melancholy composition is meant to directly follow up the newfound liberation of African-American slaves with the question "[we] are free...free to do what?" It evokes a sense of sorrow, and stylistically can be directly traced to the tradition of spirituals.
We have even more brand new ones from Tom Kubis, including great takes on Birth of the Blues, Blue Skies, and Side by Side, as well as the trombone feature My Blue Heaven. Please see below for these and many more from the prolific king of Walrus Music Publishing. Also brand new is our friend John LaBarbera's arrangement of Thou Swell as written for the Diva Jazz Orchestra.
Our other new Jazz Lines Publications releases are two that each couple a pair of the great names in jazz history. First we have Blue Skies (Trumpets No End). This alternate take on Irving Berlin's Blue Skies comes from the pen of Mary Lou Williams, and was written for the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Retitled by Ellington, this arrangement will serve as a raucous and exciting feature for your ensemble's trumpet section. As unlikely a collaboration as the Count Basie Orchestra and the compositions of Oliver Nelson may seem, 1971's Afrique proved that the Basie band was more than capable of taking on the challenges of Nelson's ultra-modern writing style. The newly-published Kilimanjaro is effectively a modified minor blues, performed over a dense Afro-Cuban groove with occasional brief shifts into 5/4 to provide performers and listeners alike with a nice surprise.
NEW PDF DOWNLOADABLE ARRANGEMENTS NOTES: (February 23rd Update): Jeff Jarvis's Native Sons was just added to the site in PDF form, so we now have 40 brand new and newly-listed PDF downloadable arrangements available this month. Our newest Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington PDF releases are Happy-Go-Lucky Local and Star Crossed Lovers, which join February's earlier entries: Caravan, Concerto for Cootie, The Eighth Veil, Count Basie's Every Day I Have the Blues, and Lionel Hampton's Flying Home.
