Tom Kubis' take on "Birth of the Blues" puts a delightfully playful spin on an old classic. After a bombastic introduction, the melody is handled by one trumpet atop the woodwind section and features several cutesy (but tricky) alterations to the original tune. The post-melody shout chorus features some similar tricks in a unison trumpet line. The final shout chorus takes several cues from the classic Basie sound, but be warned that your ensemble needs a strong lead trumpet player who can handle the lengthy blow!
