OCTOBER NOTES: (October 15th Update) Brand new is another from Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Bregman's arrangement of I've Got You Under My Skin from the Cole Porter Songbook album. A simple yet effective reading of this standard. It's also a good chance to give your sax and trumpet sections a break during live performances, as the accompanying ensemble consists of only four trombones and rhythm sectionFrom the same team and record we also have I Concentrate on You. It's a fairly simple studio orchestra arrangement, but provides rich accompaniment that compliments the song's naturally lovely melody. Aside from a few swift string figures, this arrangement is not overly difficult, and the minimal brass parts make it an ideal option for a mid-concert chops break.
We are very pleased to now have available arrangements from our friend Jennifer Wharton's Bonegasm's album Grit and Grace. Trombone quartet and rhythm recordings, all written by female arrangers, these convey a cosmopolitan sense of originality, while also reminding us of the many genres the excellent writers and players know so well. These charts are highly original, challenging, and rewarding.
In October of 1949 Tony Bennett, along with his pianist and vocal coach Tony Tamburello, recorded a demo 78 consisting of the songs Crazy Rhythm and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. It was these recordings that inspired Mitch Miller to sign Bennett to a Columbia Records recording contract. And it is safe to say that it was the recording of Boulevard of Broken Dreams that was the motivating factor as Bennett then recorded the song in his first Columbia recording session in April of 1950. That arrangement was crafted by Marty Manning and featured strings. In 1956, Bennett re-visited this song with a big band, this time featuring an arrangement supplied by Ray Conniff. This recording went on to become one of Bennett's signature songs and it is consistently regarded as one of his greatest hits. This publication was prepared from Ray Conniff's original pencil score - this is not a transcription.
We have another particularly interesting new release-Street of Dreams as written for Art Farmer by Oliver Nelson. The opening track on 1962's Listen to Art Farmer and the Orchestra, it wastes no time in showcasing both Farmer's romantic flugelhorn and Nelson's dense, complex arranging style. Don't be fooled by the slow tempo - this is a highly challenging piece that will require minute ensemble precision to pull off, but the end result is more than worth the effort.
We have more from Walrus Music Publishing friends Jim Cifelli and Bill Cunliffe. We also have a brand new vocal arrangement of Sweet Georgia Brown from Mark Taylor, and another new original from Michele Fernández, Sao Meu Sol (Olhos Verdes), an uplifting Brazilian samba that was written as an anniversary gift to her husband.
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: September's New Charts pages have more great new Christmas music, including Ella Fitzgerald's Sleigh Ride (yes, the version in Elf!) and Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
