MAY NOTES: Brand new is Vine Street Rumble from Benny Carter. Best known for being the first movement of his Kansas City Suite, recorded in 1960 by the Count Basie Orchestra, this Jazz Lines Publications version is based off of a revised edition that Carter penned in 1989 for a live appearance with the WDR Big Band. The feel and melody are the same, but there are a number of differences that give this later interpretation its own unique vibe.

May also brings a fine new release from Hal Leonard, Mark Taylor's little big band version of the Jobim classic Chega de Saudade. Featuring tenor sax and trombone, a medium samba groove, and skilled scoring throughout, this one sounds great in the six-horn format.

This month also saw the release of the 1987 version of Katy Do, which Benny Carter also originally wrote for Count Basie's Kansas City Suite. Also new is the Nat 'King' Cole version of The Song is Ended, as arranged by Billy May. Another new one from Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Irving Berlin Song Book via Paul Weston is Remember.

Amongst the wide field of Duke Ellington-composed masterpieces, Conga Brava (1940) stands near the top of the ranks. One of the earliest examples of a crossover of jazz and Afro-Cuban music, the performance features all of the trademark mannerisms of the Ellington sound - unique melodies, use of plunger-muted brass, and a heavy emphasis on the personalities of his sidemen - operating at their peak creativity.

We are very pleased to announce the publication of the complete Glenn Miller Orchestra's Nutcracker Suite as arranged by Dave Wolpe. We also are thrilled to present our first Henry Mancini arrangement, Lujon. This publication was based on Mancini's original 1960 pencil score and the set of parts used during the recording session - this is not a transcription.

Other recent releases include Frank Sinatra's Blue Skies. The Sy Oliver arrangement of the Irving Berlin standard is a combination feature for Tommy Dorsey's trombone playing as well as Sinatra's singing. Also from the Berlin song book is Ella Fitzgerald's The Song is Ended, another from the pen of Paul Weston.

We also proudly present our first new Charlie Parker with Strings arrangement in quite a while, Jimmy Carroll's Star Dust. This publication was based on Carroll's pencil score and the set of parts that were created for the 1949 recording session.

APRIL HIGHLIGHTS: We recently released the first of several upcoming exciting new arrangements from Ella Fitzgerald, Paul Weston's arrangement of Blue Skies. This is widely regarded as one of Ella's finest recorded performances. This publication was based on the original set of parts that were used at the 1958 recording session - this is also not a transcription. Another new one is Greg Hopkins's Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters, recorded by the Buddy Rich Big Band on The Roar of '74. This is a kaleidoscopic musical experience that retains its unpredictable excitement from start to finish.
