If you're looking for a version of Auld Lang Syne that strays from the Guy Lombardo approach while still maintaining a classic dance band sound, then this Dave Wolpe arrangement for the Glenn Miller Orchestra is for you. Its easy sense of swing and liberal references to other Miller classics will make it a delightful addition to your holiday performance. This arrangement comes from the Glenn Miller Orchestra's 1997 album In the Christmas Mood II.
Beginning at a slowly swinging gait, the melody is handled by the woodwinds with the brass playing a background that is a direct reference to Moonlight Serenade. A held chord at the end is followed by a four bar drum break that sets up a new double-time tempo that continues for the rest of the chart. A modified sax melody now sees the brass referencing Tuxedo Junction with their backgrounds.
A tenor sax solo commences at measure 28 with some simple prodding from the rest of the horns as backgrounds. A short send-off marks the return of the melody at 54, slowly building momentum until reaching an all-out frenzy at measure 70, where an In the Mood inspired riff kicks into effect in the brass section. The band continues to riff hard all the way through the end, finishing with the horns holding atop another rapid-fire drum fill.
