Lunceford, Jimmie

Although overshadowed by the legacies of other more prominent big band leaders today, Jimmie Lunceford's organizations were, at their peak, considered by many to be on musical equal footing as the finest bands of the 1930s and 1940s. Known for their razor-sharp precision and light and amiable two-beat feel, the Lunceford band had a highly unique sound that would influence many other groups for years to come. Born in 1902, Lunceford learned several instruments as a child as a student of Wilberforce Whiteman, father of fellow bandleader Paul Whiteman. Organizing his first band while working as an athletics teacher in Tennessee, Lunceford's big break came in 1934 when his band was booked to perform at the Cotton Club in Harlem. The band's style was already firmly established by this point due to the brilliant arranging of trumpeter/vocalist Sy Oliver, who would go on to have a prominent career as an arranger well beyond his Lunceford years. Unlike several of his contemporaries, Lunceford's bands were oftentimes just as much a vaudeville-style comedic act as they were a musical dynamo. Skits involving slapstick humor, silly lyrics and dance routines, and costumes were the norm. Despite this lighthearted veneer, Lunceford was known as one of the most demanding bandleaders of they day, rehearsing his bands into exact precision on a regular basis. Due to these intense demands, as well as his tendency to underpay, a number of Lunceford's top musicians would leave in the early 1940s for better pay elsewhere, resulting in a decline in the overall quality of the band's musical product. Sadly, Lunceford would pass away at the age of 45 after collapsing during an autograph session in Seaside, Oregon. The band would continue for another two years as a ghost band under the direction of longtime band members Eddie Wilcox and Joe Thomas.
