Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement
Description: Tango - Medium Difficult
Publisher: Walrus Music Publishing
Think Chopin meets jazz. A Tango in '3'? An interesting challenge for you band – something really different that your audience will enjoy. The piece starts out with simple melody played by the saxes accompanied by brass counterpoint that sounds like something from the Romantic era. There’s a long solo section best suited for flugelhorn that has an open ECM-like feel. As the texture builds with added ensemble parts, the meter changes to “7” (4 + 3) that’s easier than it sounds but requires a solid rhythm section and a guitarist who knows how to use effects creatively on an extended solo. There are optional changes for a trombone solo to sub for the guitar if needed. After the guitar solo builds, the original melody comes back modified to fit the meter change. The trumpet range stays in the staff and the lead trombone only goes to Eb above the bass clef. Medium – difficult based on the meter changes. Level 4.5. 5 saxes, 4 trumpet/flugelhorns, 4 trombones, piano, bass, guitar & drums + optional wordless vocal part included for 1 or 2 singers. Check out the big band version featuring the amazing soloist Adam Meckler, (flugelhorn) on John’s big band recording 'Five Years On.'
