The piece begins with a simple 4/4 theme played at a slow tempo. The melody and form are retained throughout but the meter and style shifts to a jazz waltz which morphs into a contrapuntal Bembé section. A strong rhythm section augmented by extra percussion is recommended. After setting the mood with a short poem, the vocalist sings the main song and improvises in spots. Note: This arrangement is greatly different than the instrumental version in that it’s reorchestrated to accommodate the voice. As heard on the John Paulson Big Band CD “The Refuge Project.”
