"Bones of the Dead" for jazz orchestra is a big piece and cooks throughout. It can be a hefty middle of the set feature for 2 soloists, with a written bass solo section, and a drums & congas vamp at the end. Or a dramatic set closer? This arrangement elaborates on the original Quintet version: via re-harmonization of the chorale sections; an extended bass solo section; and also including new material in an exciting coda featuring re-orchestrated references to earlier melodies & motifs. Originally, "Bones" was written as a reflection on "what goes around, comes around" (a common metaphor for life's lessons, cause and effect, or social Karma). The piece came out of an awareness that "we can't escape ourselves" and can be seen to represent an idea of evolution out of conflict via an individual journey. Ranges: trumpet: Eb6; trombone: B4. Solo changes: alto 1, tenor 1, trumpet 4, trombone 1, vibes, guitar, piano; special bass solo section (as written for Anthony Jackson); drum & congas solo vamp & fade (a niente) at end.
