Edition: JAZZ BIG BAND ARRANGEMENT
Description: MEDIUM DIFFICULT C.K.U.A. is named after a radio station in Alberta, Canada which has been a huge supporter of the arts, jazz in particular, for many years. This composition alternates between a 12/8 Afro-Cuban and broken swing groove. It features the sax section and solos for lead tenor and guitar. The composition explores a somewhat non-conventional approach to big band formal structure and is largely based on 3 note motive. Instrumentation includes 10 brass, 5 saxes ( 2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari, pno, bass, guitar, drums). C.K.U.A. has a challenging sax soli. Lead trumpet to written "E". The first tenor sax player will note ( ) markings in the solo section. These markings indicate that the soloist should improvise inside these bracketed sections, only on the second time through these repeated sections. A guitar with a somewhat overdriven sound ( i..e. John Scholfield sound concept) works very well for the composition
