Traditional, slow blues with elements drawn from equal parts of the Basie, Thad/Mel, and Buddy Rich bands. The quarter note = 92 tempo is an exercise in restraint, requiring diligent attention to style that will particularly challenge young ensembles. Emphasis on the proper placement of the quarter note and execution of extreme dynamic contrast is essential. Powerful voicings with dense harmonies pit the brass against the saxes throughout. A full-chorus stop-time horn soli follows the melody statement and additional ensemble chorus. Two open solo sections follow, separated by an interlude ensemble chorus, and closing shout. Advanced difficulty, primarily for the demanding, but moderately-paced brass parts. Lead trumpet range to double high G. A great opener or closer that can feature multiple soloists. 5/4/4/G/P/B/D.
