Dedicated to the excuses of music students everywhere upon the teacher's inquiry about the prior week's practice, this original blues for saxophone ensemble plus rhythm is written in a medium swing style at quarter = 120. But don't let the moderate tempo fool you, because double time passages abound in the four-chorus sax soli with ever-increasing intensity. The piece concludes with a stop-time chorus for the saxes before a reprise of the melody. Mostly inspired by Charlie Parker, but with hints of Monk scattered throughout.
