JUNE NOTES: (June 17th Update) Our newest releases include new entries in our Joe Newman and Tony Bennett series. Our sixth Joe Newman small group chart is Ernie Wilkins's arrangement of 'Speak Low.' It calls for 6 woodwinds and rhythm section along with a trumpet soloist. This would be a great opportunity for younger woodwind players to get doubling experience as this is not at all difficult and no solos are required. From Mr. Bennett we have 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.' This Robert Farnon arrangement of the Hugh Martin/Ralph Blaine Christmas classic was written for Bennett’s 1968 album Snowfall. Farnon’s orchestration provides a lush, yet tranquil, setting for Bennett’s golden tenor.

We also have 'Sing, Sing, Sing' as recorded by the Andrews Sisters. Perhaps the definitive example of a Swing Era "warhorse," Louis Prima's 'Sing, Sing, Sing' was made most famous by the Benny Goodman Orchestra. Vic Schoen's arrangement for the Andrews Sisters takes the irrepressible enthusiasm of the original and transforms it into a high-energy extravaganza that offers up a good challenge for both vocalists and instrumentalists alike. This publication was prepared from Vic Schoen's original pencil score with the exception of the vocal group parts, which were transcribed from the recording.

Organist/arranger Bill Doggett was best known for his pioneering work in the field of R&B, but was no stranger to the world of jazz. His arrangement of 'After You've Gone' was written for vocalist Ella Fitzgerald's 1962 album Rhythm Is My Business, and is a high energy tour-de-force for both singer and band from start to finish.

From Ella we also have 'He Loves and She Loves,' another from her Gershwin Song Book record, as arranged by Nelson Riddle.

Another recent release of our Jazz Lines Publications is 'Jingle Bells' as recorded by Johnny Mercer and the Pied Pipers. This Skip Martin arrangement was recorded in Los Angeles in 1946 by Paul Weston and his orchestra featuring Mercer with the Pied Pipers.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: Last month we introduced Wayne Shorter compositions as arranged by members of and recorded by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. These are classic tunes by one of jazz's great composers, arranged by members of one of the greatest jazz bands of our time.

We also are pleased to introduce 2024 Alfred Publishing New Issues. We now have 11 of these listed, with more to come ASAP. New is a Scott Ragsdale vocal arrangement of 'You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To' and an easy version of 'Blue Skies' from Victor López. We also have new originals from Kris Berg and Drew Zaremba, two new charts on Wes Montgomery tunes, and a Mike Kamuf take on 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' based on the classic Clark Terry version. This is a ballad that I wrote for Bill Watrous's Grammy-nominated Tiger of San Pedro album, that, for whatever reason, never made it to the final release. Though Bill strongly disagreed at the time, legendary producer John Hammond was convinced, and rightly so, that Bill's strong suit for appealing to the general record-buying public would be ballads.

The score highlights Bill's exceptional range but the solo trombone part can be played without the 8va passages and be a suitable trombone feature. The flute and flugelhorn parts are optional but add a nice variety to the scoring.
