Woods, Phil
Phil Woods was one of the definitive post-Charlie Parker saxophone soloists. Classically trained on clarinet at Juilliard, he took up one of the saxophone chairs in Dizzy Gillespie's famed State Department band of the mid-1950s on recommendation from Quincy Jones. Woods and Jones would enjoy a fruitful partnership over the years, with the former appearing on the latter's best records in the 1960s.
Woods moved to France for 4 years, and upon returning to the US, formed the quintet that became his main musical vehicle for the rest of his life (he passed in 2015). This band featured such notables as trumpeters Tom Harrell and Brian Lynch, trombonist Hal Crook, and pianist Bill Charlap. He was also an in-demand session player for pop dates, performing highly memorable solos on Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" and Steely Dan's "Doctor Wu."
