Beginning on a somewhat film-noir-style note, Phil Woods's "And It Was Nowhere" eventually turns into a mellow, Basie-inspired alternate melody on the chord changes to "Out of Nowhere." The shout following the open solo choruses features both some clever harmonic substitutions as well as a few nods to other "Nowhere"-based tunes. Although taken at a moderate pace, there are a few deceptively speedy ensemble passages at times.
