Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement

Description: Swing - Medium

Publisher: Lush Life Music

Originally titled "dein ist mein ganzes erz," the melody that forms the basis of this wonderful Bill Finegan arrangement was written by Franz Lehár for his 1929 operetta The Land of Smiles. Glenn Miller recorded the Finegan chart in March 1940 on Bluebird B-10728-B, with Fools Rush In on the A-side. Somewhat unusually for an up-tempo Miller chart, the reeds are scored to achieve the "Miller sound", with a clarinet leading two altos and two tenors throughout. This configuration is more associated with Miller ballads. However, it works superbly in the setting of Bill Finegan's chart. He didn't write an intro. Instead the piece opens with reeds taking the melody, backed by muted brass for almost the entire first chorus. An eight measure modulation moves the key from F to Ab for what traditionally would be a vocal chorus. However, Finegan chose instead to showcase the trombone section for the next chorus, supported by the trumpets for the middle eight. A second modulation to Db introduces the shout chorus, with soaring reeds over open brass, bringing the chart to a rousing finale. A superb example of the Miller/Finegan combination working at its best.
