Winter Birds is a medium/up swinger with solos for tenor Sax and trumpet. The solos flow out of the opening melody but are not based on the opening harmony. The background behind the tenor solo leads to an interlude that then leads to a key change for the trumpet solo. The shout chorus following the trumpet solo is based on the solo changes and starts with a small group of trumpet, alto, tenor and trombone with bass (drums and piano drop out) that leads to a dialog between horns and drums before restating the opening melody. This is not really a difficult chart rhythmically. The challenge to this chart is blend and balance. Lead trumpet goes to E6 (concert D6).
