Edition: Jazz Studio Orchestra Arrangement with Vocal
Description: Swing - Medium
Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications
Recorded in 1957 and released in 1960 on his album I've Got The World on a String, Louis Armstrong paired his incomparable vocal and trumpet stylings with the lush arrangements of Russ Garcia to create a wonderfully romantic mood on the classic standard When Your Lover Has Gone. Aside from some moderately rangey parts in the first trombone, this is a very simple arrangement that should be playable for most skill levels.
The introduction sets an unusually dark tone, with a horn-like trombone duet over some uneasy ponticello string figures. Armstrong's vocal entrance at measure 10, however, does away with any anxiety the intro may have instilled in the listener with his trademark charming growl. His performance is overall appropriately subdued, with the accompanying figures in the brass and strings doing their best to keep out of the way while still providing adequate inspiration and support. The arrangement increases in volume a bit when Armstrong switches to trumpet at measure 42 before returning to its original mellow state when the vocals resume at measure 58. The backgrounds behind the second vocal statement are identical to the first, and should be performed as similarly as possible. The arrangement comes full circle with a return to the more ominous style of the introduction, once again with horn-like trombones and ponticello strings ending things on a somewhat stressed note.
This arrangement is for vocal soloist with studio orchestra. The trumpet solo has been placed in the trumpet 4 part in case your vocalist is not also a trumpeter. A minimum of 3 first violins, 2 second violins, 2 violas, and 2 cellos are needed.
This publication was based on the original set of parts used during the recording session and Russ Garcia's pencil score - this is not a transcription.
