"Waltz of the Penguins" has a highly mellow and lilting melody that is handled largely by the trombone section with a brief key change for the saxophones to have some fun. A brief trombone interlude after the initial solo section leads into a written bass solo and some trombone trading over a vamp before a surprisingly moody ending. Solo changes are included in each trombone part, and the section is featured in both melodic and improvising capacities.
