Edition: Jazz Small Group Arrangement

Description: Swing - Medium

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

Originally performed on his 1960 album Screamin' the Blues, Oliver Nelson would record an updated version of Three Seconds on his 1975 album Stolen Moments. This arrangement is based on the latter, which features an expanded instrumentation, background figures, and a shout chorus not present on the earlier version.

The melody is, as the title implies, based around three notes stacked on top of each other in major seconds. Between the subtly syncopated rhythm, the bass ostinato, and the overall spaced-out feel, the performance lends itself to a naturally ominous feel. The second time through the melody sees a simple counterline added in to slightly increase the complexity.

A series of open solos eventually leads into a simple shout chorus that sees the ensemble voicings spread out a bit more. The baritone sax is effectively a member of the rhythm section during this part, and should be performed accordingly. Once the shout chorus is done, the main melody returns and is played the same as it was at the beginning, ending on a soft, but tension filled, final chord.

This arrangement was based on Oliver Nelson's original pencil score and the set of parts used during the recording session - this is not a transcription.
