Edition: JAZZ BIG BAND ARRANGEMENT
Description: BOSSA NOVA - MEDIUM This chart is a flugelhorn (or trumpet) feature. The solo is in the first book and second trumpet has the lead part. In spite of the title, the main groove is a combination of bossa and tango rhythms with some montuna figures here and there. The range of the solo part is very reasonable although a warm, expressive sound is desirable. The release of the first chorus gives the soloist a breathing spell with the brass section taking over the melody. The entire second chorus is an improvised solo and the changes are fairly standard (with a few curveballs in the bridge.) Some of the conjunto-style backgrounds might take a little shedding for younger bands but the tempo is moderate (quarter note=120.) Following the solo chorus, saxes take the melody for the first two "A" sections, providing some nice color contrastl. The bridge moves into a 12/8 Afro-Cuban groove (drum parts are notated precisely enough to give younger players a guide.) Back to 4/4 for the next "A", the brass section delivers a nice, full-throated, Cuban son version of the melody (lead trumpet only needs a good "C".) A final half-chorus rounds out this tune with the solo flugelhorn back in command. A brief montuna coda gives the soloist a bit more blowing space before a quiet, rubato ending. At just over five minutes, this would be a good way to show off your trpt/flg soloist and crack Latin ensemble work at a festival or concert. Optional vibes, guitar. Medium.
