This movement largely consists of three main melodic motifs mixed and matched in various ways over the course of the arrangement. These motifs are a simple series of warm held tones, a bluesy minor key riff, and a brightly trilling major key riff. The one constant is the infectious 5/4 bass and drum groove that keeps everything glued together. Soloists on the original recording are Farid Baron on piano, followed by trading between the four horns (Marsalis on trumpet, Victor Goines on soprano sax, Wess Anderson on alto sax and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone).
