One of Benny Golson's most significant attributes is that he was not only a master of big band jazz composition and arranging, but also an accomplished saxophonist who played in some classic small groups as well. This gave him a wide variety of approaches to bring to his work. Stablemates was the tune that brought Golson's talents to the attention of the jazz world at large. His childhood friend, John Coltrane, originally gave the chart to Miles Davis, who recorded it in 1955. Soon afterwards, Dizzy Gillespie hired Golson for a big band tour and commissioned this particular arrangement, which they recorded in 1957.
