This is a challenging mix of alto sax and trumpet solos, up-swing rhythm changes, hard hitting ensemble exchanges, dense orchestrations, and more. It's a natural for contest presentations and other important concerts. A vital consideration in the performance of this chart is the observance of dynamics. Because of the tempo and energy level, ensembles will be inclined to play at a strong volume level all of the time--special care should be taken to differentiate between the "mf" and the "f" volumes so that the dense quality of the voicings does not become overbearing (this applies to the rhythm section as well). An important item in the pacing of this piece is the rhythm section's ability to contrast the big ensemble sections with the solo sections. The drummer especially should be sensitive to an approaching ensemble section, building gradually to make a smooth transition. The same concept applies to a solo section coming out of an ensemble; this enables the soloist to have more of a chance to build their solo dynamically. The solos may be extended by opening up measures 65-96 for the alto (with backgrounds on cue the last time) and by opening up bars 129-160 after playing the first-time figures and cueing the figures marked 2nd time on the last solo chorus.
