Description: Swing - Medium

The Sheik of Araby was a big record for Ellington in 1932 featuring great solos by Lawrence Brown, Tricky Sam and Johnny Hodges on soprano sax. Hodges was nervous about recording his solo. The night before the recording, he went to Sidney Bechet's apartment to take a lesson. We hear Bechet all over Hodges' solo. The chart is brilliant. One feature is the brass section becoming the rhythm section in the out chorus. Solos for 2 trombones, soprano sax. Alto and bari also play the melody.
