Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement

Description: Advanced

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

This Gil Evans arrangement was part of a series of compositions based on classical themes written in the late 1940s for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. The other titles were La Paloma, The Troubador, Maids of Cadiz, Arab Dance, and Spanish Dance. Sabre Dance was written by Aram Khachaturian in 1942 as part of the last movement of his ballet Gayane. This arrangement was written sometime in 1947 and was possibly meant to be performed at the Glen Island Casino broadcast of that year. However, the arrangement was never recorded and probably never played. This ambitious arrangement features 3 flutes along with 5 reeds doubling on clarinets and bass clarinets. This publication is based on Gil's score and the original set of parts. However, included are alternate parts for the horns in F (trumpet 4/trombone 3).
