Edition: Jazz Little Big Band Arrangement
Description: New Orleans Second Line/Swing - Advanced
Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications
Christian Jacobs' arrangement of Poinciana does a wonderful job of merging the classical with the contemporary. Beginning in a style highly reminiscent of Ahmad Jamal's famous recording, things continue to expand further and further out as the performance goes on, eventually contracting back to its origins, making for a delightful reworking from beginning to end.
A lengthy piano solo (fully written out) dominates the early goings, with the horns entering with the melody at measure 57; atop the horn melody is a trumpet solo that should wind in and around the rest of the ensemble. Once the trumpet solo wraps up, the arrangement's begins heading in a very different via a substantially re-harmonized version of the tune's introduction at measure 89. The ensemble gradually breaks up into some densely mapped counterpoint before an alto sax solo commences at measure 121.
A few measures later, the feel suddenly and surprisingly breaks into a fast jazz waltz, where it remains for the rest of the alto solo, plus the ensuing ensemble passage and guitar solo. A gradual swell sets up the return of the original groove at measure 221, with some densely mapped harmonies underpinning a roaring brass section. The high volume doesn't last for long, as the horns taper back and the arrangement returns to where it begins with one last Jamal homage.
The piano part was fully arranged and is completely written out. This publication was prepared from the original set of parts from the Phil Norman Tentet library - this is not a transcription.
