Description: Afro-Cuban - Difficult
Publisher: Walrus Music Publishing
Named in honor of the legendary Paquito D'Rivera, this composition is built around the rhythms, excitement and energy of Afro Cuban music. The piece begins with a rock influenced cha cha cha feel. After the 48 measure statement of the theme there is room for the lead alto player to stretch out on an extended solo. The intensity builds through a band shout chorus into a transition to a funk/guiro mid section featuring an extended solo which is a tour de force for the trombones and trumpets. The original feel then returns restating the theme and allowing for an extended "conversation" between the two soloists before the piece ends in a powerful coda. "Paquito" offers an opportunity to showcase all sections of the band including the rhythm section. The energy generated by the band makes it a great favorite with audiences and an exciting challenge for the players. The piece would benefit from the inclusion of conga drums and guitar but will still be effective without if the drummer has stamina and a knowledge of the Afro Cuban style. The central section of the piece would also benefit from being played on an electric bass utilizing the "thumb" or "slap" style. Because of the demands placed on the lead trumpet, lead trombone and the rhythm section this piece would be most suitble for a more advanced band with some experience of the style. Soloists: alto/tenor sax. No doubles. Number of brass: 8. Difficult-advanced.
