Composer Dave Hanson shares his colorful harmonic sensibilities with this relaxed Bossa Nova composition. The lush lines weave in and out to create a beautiful soundscape that floats over the rhythm section. This would be an excellent choice for a “contrast” tune at a festival or concert.

From the composer/arranger:

Maya’s Mood is an easy Bossa Nova melody with hints of Pop music, accompanied with lush Jazz voicings and even a ‘Steely Dan’ chord
or two!
The chart begins with a pedal point under harmony reminiscent of Herbie Hancock, then the melody is stated by unison Saxes, then
unison brass over Sax voicings. The pedal point returns as an eight-bar transition to the first solo, played by 2nd Trumpet with Saxophone
pads. This leads to a solo in Alto 1 with Trombones playing the harmonic accompaniment. Both solos are fully notated and chord symbols
are indicated for optional improvisation. There is an eight-bar shout chorus, then an abbreviated version of the main theme for eight bars
and a slight ritardando at the end.
The brevity of the phrases and overall form, simple Bossa rhythmic figures, and easy and comfortable range requirements (lead Trumpet
no higher than written G above the staff), allow younger players access to some sophisticated and satisfying jazz harmony. The Guitar
part has some melodic doubling of simple Saxophone and Trombone section melodies - a chance for a younger player to work on
reading and blending with wind instruments.
Most of the phrasing and articulation are notated, but any eighth notes without phrasing marks should be played in a legato even-eighth
style. Dynamics are carefully indicated, and please take note of the FDp and fp moments. That will add more drama and emotion as
contrast to the somewhat “laid back” Bossa Nova style.
Enjoy!
