Edition: Jazz Studio Orchestra Arrangement with Vocal
Description: Bossa Nova - Medium

Antonio Carlos Jobim had a wonderful way of writing song forms that, while unusual on paper, are completely natural and flowing to the ear. With its extended AABC form, Lamento falls solidly into this camp. This Claus Ogerman arrangement was written for and recorded on Jobim's 1967 album Wave.
The tune as a whole is performed twice. After a brief introduction to set the mood, the first melody statement is carried mostly by Jobim's vocals, with some delicate background figures from the flutes and strings to provide just enough color to liven things up a bit. The final section of the melody shifts to an instrumental, with the piano and wind instruments swapping back and forth before an extended semi-vamp leads into the second melody statement.
Shifting to an instrumental focus for a moment, Jimmy Cleveland gets a chance to shine on trombone for the first two A sections before the vocals return. The arrangement is largely copied from earlier, with the main difference being a brief flute melody line on the final section. The ending is a bit stretched out, with the ensemble lingering on a diminished chord for an almost-too-long amount of time before resolving to a minor sound for the ending vamp and fade out.
This publication was based on the Claus Ogerman pencil score - this is not a transcription.
