In La Parguera, a more authentic sound and feel will be achieved if the rhythm section is aware of the rhythmic 2-3 clave subdivision and refer to it in their comping. Drums and bass have have been given sample patterns at measure 5-6. In general, the piano should form rhythmic ideas around the clave concept as well. In this two-bar pattern, players should avoid anticipating beat 3 in the first measure, but should anticipate it in the second measure. All ensemble figures are based on this clave, and deviation from it in the rhythm parts will create a cluttered sound. The bass player should play lines similar to those in measures 5-8 throughout. For bass players familiar with salsa styles, a more free salsa bass line (such as omitting the first note of each measure of the pattern) may be used in the solo sections, but not during the performance of ensemble figures; they require a down-beat reference. The drummer and any auxiliary percussionists should use the suggested groove at bars 5 and 6 as a guide. Careful attention paid to all of these points will help lock in ensemble figures and create a more exciting performance.
