Marty Paich's Dek-tette provided an appropriately airy setting for Ella Fitzgerald on her 1958 album Ella Swings Lightly. The primary challenge of Paich's arrangement of Just You, Just Me comes from maintaining its brisk pace while never allowing your performance to get too heavy-handed.
Beginning with just drums and bass, Fitzgerald sings through the melody twice, with some mix-and-match horn backgrounds behind her. On the second chorus, she occasionally diverges from the melody for some brief scatting, and your singer is encouraged to do the same. Fitzgerald takes a break to allow for a half chorus of Bud Shank's alto and another half chorus of Bob Enevoldsen's trombone, with backgrounds behind each that are a bit more involved than the ones under the vocals.
Fitzgerald returns at measure 65 with a surprise appearance of the song's verse; the key also modulates up a whole step here. A horn blast heralds the return of the melody at measure 81, with the horns engaging in some interlocking, corkscrewing riffs. Fitzgerald joins in one one of said riffs for the final few bars before one last jab brings the performance to a surprisingly blunt conclusion.
Trumpet 3 and trombone 2 parts are included that may be used in place of the horn in F part.
