Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement
Description: Swing - Medium Difficult
Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications
If it weren't for the hard-swinging arrangements of Fletcher Henderson, there's a good chance that Benny Goodman would never have claimed the 'King of Swing' moniker during the 1930s. This arrangement of Just You, Just Me features several Henderson hallmarks, and will make a fine addition to your band's program, either for a dance band gig or a more formal concert setting.
Beginning with a vivacious full-band introduction, the first half of the melody at measure 9 is handled by the trombone section, with the saxes swooping into the gaps before taking over the melody on the bridge. The trombones take point once more with a soli at measure 22. A quick trumpet fanfare leads into a chorus of Goodman's clarinet at measure 30, with the primary accompaniment coming from some hard-riffing sax figures.
The final chorus of the tune is mostly reserved for an ensemble shout, and as is typical for Henderson, the writing is overflowing with energy and boisterous enthusiasm. There's a break in the action at measure 71 for 8 more bars of Goodman (or trombone, as was the case in Henderson's original parts), but the full band roars back in for the joyous final stretch at measure 79.
This publication was prepared from the original set of parts used for the 1945 recording session - this is not a transcription.
