Jump is the final movement of Jump Start, the Wynton Marsalis ballet commissioned by Twyla Tharp in 1994 and premiered at New York City's Metropolitan Opera the following spring. Tharp is one of the most celebrated American choreographers of the twentieth century. Unlike Marsalis's first ballet score, Jazz (1993), this piece has a strong 'jazz identity,' but it's less of a suite. Tharp asked Marsalis to compose self-contained pieces, each built around a different dance rhythm, and that's exactly what she got.
