The circular melody line in the trumpet and alto sax is complemented by a polyrhythmic counterpoint in the bass clarinet, closed-plunger-muted trombone, piano and bass to give this movement a delightfully off-kilter feeling. The drums remain the only rhythmic constant, playing a steady 4/4 pulse. The solo section provides its own challenges by switching back and forth between 5/4 and 4/4. Soloists on the original recording are Marsalis on trumpet and Victor Goines on bass clarinet.
