The Glenn Miller Orchestra originally covered I Know That You Know in 1938. This version, however, was written for the band by Bill Finegan at some point during the years it was led by clarinetist Buddy DeFranco. It appears to have never been recorded, either live or in-studio.
A clarinet feature from start to finish, it is a wonderfully energetic interpretation of a naturally exuberant tune that features several of Finegan's arranging trademarks. A fluttering and at times dissonant introduction sets the stage for the tune's arrival at measure 9. Initially handled by the brass, DeFranco and the saxes riff in between the melody's cracks before taking center stage around measure 33.
The key shifts down a major 3rd at measure 41, with some clever harmonic writing to launch DeFranco into an extended improvised solo that begins at measure 57. With the exception of a four bar descending line across the horns, DeFranco remains the star attraction for nearly the entire rest of the arrangement, even getting some time to duet with the drums at measure 123 (where another key change also occurs). The band roars back to the foreground for a lively shout chorus at measure 139. DeFranco returns at measure 155 and takes charge all the way to the end, starting with some mildly dissonant tagged chords before a fairly typically Miller-style fanfare to wrap things up. Although originally a clarinet feature, this arrangement can be reworked into a feature for other instruments if you so choose. To that effect, we have included an optional part that is transposed for E-flat instruments.
This publication was prepared from Bill Finegan's pencil score and a set of parts in the Glenn Miller library. The sound sample is a midi playback of the arrangement as no other audio exists.
