Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement
Description: Swing/Rock - Advanced
Publisher: Walrus Music Publishing
Beginning with an extended rubato, rhythmically ambiguous opening to set the tone, Ian McDougall's "Heading Out" eventually transforms into a fast modal swinger that features trumpet and trombone as primary solo instruments. There should be a noticeable tension between the ethereal, slow-moving horns and the brisk pace of the rhythm section. The solo section features a brief shift to a half-time rock groove to add even more inventive complexity to the performance. An exciting post-solo shout chorus features some challenging polyrhythms that will likely require a little bit of attention to line up properly. The interlude section at the end allows for a segue into another McDougall arrangement, "Heading Back."
