Andrew has created a unique chart that blends a fiery, driving Latin groove with a more carefree Chuck Mangione feel. After a percussive intro, a trio with tenor, trumpet, and trombone present the head of the tune. There is an optional conga part included, but in his notes to the director, Andrew suggests adding other percussion instruments to add to the flavor of the chart.

From the composer/arranger:

The “busy-ness” of the music, with its many percussion instruments performing simultaneously, grabs a hold of the ears and will not subside!
Couple that element with the agile Saxes gliding through their passages and the sizzle that the Brass contributes, and the listeners will be
captivated. With all of this going on at once, resisting the groove is inconceivable! But really, why would anyone want to?
Habanero Hustle is just such a tune. Opening with a full band introduction, a trio introduces the first melody and kicks the tune into high
gear. The Saxophone section takes over while the Brass punctuate the melody all over a montuno style common in Latin music.

A 2-3 clave feel propels the tune forward. Even through the 2-3 clave is not written out, directors are encouraged to add it. A shaker and cowbell in different places could add much to the music; feel free to experiment to find where you like those most. Those instruments with the conga contribute vitality, groove and that familiar Latin style to listeners."
