What would it sound like if Eric Dolphy played with a New York City salsa band? Imagining this scene sparked the composing of 'Dolphy Dance.' By beginning with a colorful prologue presented in triple meter, MacDonald evades the question briefly, before busting into a full-throttled groove. In the style of Dolphy, both the melody and harmony are taken left of center, yet danceable rhythms are always preserved. Solos are divvied up between reed 1 (soprano/alto sax), trombone 2, trumpet 4, guitar, and drum set. Both the saxophone and trombone sections have muscly soli sections over an infectious Latin beat.
Watch Earl MacDonald conduct the University of Connecticut Symphony Orchestra in a full, orchestral rendition of this work.
