Diffusion is a medium swing tune featuring improvised solos for tenor saxophone and trumpet. Textural brass chords progress into the melody presented by trumpet and tenor saxophone. The bridge features a unique chord sequence in which minor chords descend by major thirds, giving the soloists challenging yet exciting changes on which they can improvise. This composition was commissioned by the late Maynard Ferguson. First alto saxophone doubles on a brief and accessible flute part.
