Looking for a great change of pace chart for your next performance? Creepy-Crawler from the pen of Bret Zvacek is the perfect choice. An infectious Rock Boogaloo groove, great ensemble writing and plenty of space for solos all combine to create a chart that will be a favorite of both the band and the audience. Great writing!
From the composer/arranger:
"Kids in the late '60s had tons of fun with Creepy Crawlers, a fun (but hazardous) toy where plastic insects were created out of synthetic goop heated to high temperatures. 'Creepy-Crawler' is a jazz boogaloo. The boogaloo is a dance and musical genre that is a fusion of Latin and African American styles, which was also popular in the 1960s. Lee Morgan’s famous recording of 'The Sidewinder' serves as a good stylistic guide for 'Creepy-Crawler.'
Think of the tune as dance music. There are numerous spots in the chart where various groups of instruments (and sometimes the entire band) play unison lines. Attention to articulations (rather than sheer volume) will project a sense of unity and groove. Written solos are provided, but anyone can improvise over the solo section which is a blues in G minor."
