Edition: JAZZ BIG BAND ARRANGEMENT
Description: SWING/LATIN - DIFFICULT This was originally planned as a jazz fingering etude for solo alto sax. It just grew and grew... Sounding a bit like a minor-key "Donna Lee", this chart takes structural inspiration from a favorite version of "Green Dolphin". The difference in my arrangement is that the swing and Latin grooves do not alternate in a predictable pattern. The first 8 is delivered by acapella lead alto (accompanied only by stop-time drum accents) and the groove stays in samba time throughout 3 1/2 choruses before breaking into swing time. From that point on, the swing gradually gains preeminence over the Latin feel before winning out completely. The first melody chorus builds in complexity to launch the lead alto into a solo (accompanied only by the rhythm section for the first chorus.) The alto gets another solo chorus with samba-type backgrounds building up throughout. The beginning of the fourth chorus sounds like a tutti-unison recap of the melody but it is really a half-chorus of traded fours between the band and the drummer. On the bridge of this chorus, the sax section rips into a swing soli, initiating the alternation of swing/samba that continues to the end. After solos from piano (or vibes) and fluegel, the chart closes in a reversal of the opening chorus. As the title implies, this is a hot one. It is not long but will require some shedding. Ranges are very resonable. Lead trumpet D optional vibes and guitar. Difficult.
