MARCH NOTES: March's latest is another Count Basie classic. 'Blue and Sentimental' was one of the Count Basie Orchestra's first big hits during their rise to prominence in the 1930s. This version, arranged by Frank Foster, was released on the 1960 album The Count Basie Story, and although it follows the same format as the 1938 original, it has some subtle deviations that give it something to differentiate itself.
The hits keep coming this March-we present the original 'Hay Burner' from Count Basie and Sammy Nestico! This song has become one of the best-known entries in the sizable library of the Count Basie Orchestra for good reason. This publication is from the 1968 recording Basie: Straight Ahead. This publication was prepared from the original parts that were used during the 1968 recording session - this is not a transcription, nor has anything been simplified or altered from the original parts.
We also have the first three in what will be a series of Joe Newman small group arrangements. The longtime Count Basie trumpet star recorded a series of small group albums beginning in 1954.
Among Tony Bennett's many arrangers over the years, Marion Evans collaborated with him the most. Our Jazz Lines Publications arrangement of the standard 'She's Funny That Way' comes from the Tony Makes It Happen album and is a sultry and smooth backdrop for the standard. Thanks to Marion Evans, Iconoclast, and the Tony Bennett Estate for granting us permission to publish this arrangement. Another new one from Mr. Bennett is George Siravo's fantastic arrangement of 'Who Can I Turn To?'
New from Louis Armstrong is 'Struttin' With Some Barbecue'. It is believed by some that this 1938 big band version of 'Struttin'' surpasses the greatness of even the original Hot Five recording. Featuring one of Armstrong's most magisterial recorded trumpet solos, Chappie Willet's arrangement manages to sneak in some surprisingly modern touches in the ensemble portions. Another new Pops release we are exceptionally proud of is 'What a Wonderful World' as arranged by Tommy Goodman.
Also brand new is Jimmy Mundy's wild 'Ol' Man River' chart. Mundy's show-stopping take has an interesting and surprisingly long-winded origin story. It was initially conceived and arranged as a drum feature for Buddy Rich who was playing with Eddie Condon in 1949. Condon and Rich performed this live on TV for Condon's Floor Show (March 19, 1949). The chart was refined and developed over the next decade or so before making its way into the library of the Count Basie Orchestra to serve as a feature for drummer Sonny Payne.
Two more new ones from Jazz Lines Publications mainstays Ella Fitzgerald and Nelson Riddle are 'How Long Has This Been Going On?' and 'He's Funny That Way'.
And we have re-engraved another from our friend Dave Pell's fabulous Octet book, Bob Florence's arrangement of 'Love for Sale'.
Everything above has been prepared using original scores and/or parts from the recording sessions - these are not transcriptions.

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY: We welcome HX Music to our site! We have Ryan Fraley's original 'Abacus', his 'Wexford Carol', and his fantastic take on Yes' 'Long Distance Runaround' listed below, as well as 'One for the 'Box' from Monika Herzig.
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: Late February saw the release of The Jazz Lines Publications version of the Count Basie gem 'Corner Pocket' which is now right below. Ever since its appearance as the second track on the Count Basie Orchestra’s April in Paris album (1955), 'Corner Pocket' has been recognized as one of the most iconic entries in the group's extensive library. February also saw two of Louis Armstrong's most beloved holiday arrangements released: ''Zat You, Santa Claus?' and 'Cool Yule'. Our newest specially-priced multi-chart set is comprised of six charts Quincy Jones wrote for the Ella and Basie! album, and we also updated our Jazz Lines Publications Count Basie Classics set to include our publications of 'Corner Pocket', 'Cute', 'Splanky', 'Teddy the Toad', and 'Whirlybird'.
