Rogers, Shorty
Born Milton Rajonsky in Great Barrington, MA in 1924, Rogers grew up in the Bronx. He played trumpet and wrote for Red Norvo's 1943 ensemble before he became active in military service. He joined Woody Herman in 1945 and his compositions and arrangements became a highlight of the 1949 'bebop' edition of the Herman herd. In 1950 he contributed two mini-concertos to Stan Kenton's Innovations Orchestra: 'Art Pepper' and 'Maynard Ferguson,' while also writing for Kenton's dance band. Settling in Los Angeles, he became an architect for what became known as 'West Coast Jazz.' He led big bands and small groups which were called 'Shorty Rogers and His Giants.' Recordings of these ensembles on RCA Victor and Atlantic are considered classics.
Rogers became heavily involved in movie and TV scoring; credits include 'The Three Little Bops,' a Warner Brothers cartoon, 'The Man with the Golden Arm,' and 'The Wild One.' Rogers stopped playing trumpet in the early sixties but in 1982, he picked up the trumpet and flugelhorn again, recording and touring with all-star groups. He died in 1994.
