Lewis, Mel
One of the greatest of all big band drummers, Mel Lewis initially worked with Stan Kenton and the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band before co-founding the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra in 1966. Upon Jones' departure in 1978, Jones continued leading the band on his own until his passing in 1990. The band, now known as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, continues to perform every Monday night at the Village Vanguard in New York City to this day.
