Heath, Ted
Ted Heath is considered by many to be the greatest of England's post-war big band leaders. Working as a freelance musician for much of the 1920s and 1930s, Heath was inspired to start his own band by Glenn Miller and his Army Air Force Band. This band quickly built a reputation as being the most popular dance band in Britain, and Heath and his cohorts regularly toured throughout England and even into other parts of Europe.
Heath would finally take his music to the United States in 1956, a sort-of musical exchange program that also saw Stan Kenton traveling to tour England. Heath maintained several close friendships with some of America's most popular musical figures, including Nat "King" Cole, Count Basie, Woody Herman and Ella Fitzgerald. Although Heath passed away in 1969, his band continued to tour under his name with approval from his family into the 1990s.
