Dorsey, Tommy
Trombonist and bandleader Tommy Dorsey got his start in the musical world with older brother Jimmy, leading the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra until an argument in 1935. Tommy would go on to form his own orchestra, which largely dealt in "sweet" dance band arrangements until the arrival of Sy Oliver in 1939. Having hired Oliver away from Jimmie Lunceford specifically to infuse his band with a more jazz-oriented sound, the results were immediate.
Dorsey's next stolen-away hire, vocalist Frank Sinatra, would prove even more fruitful. The young crooner became a huge hit, releasing over 80 records during his tenure with the band from 1940 to 1942. Dorsey's bands during this time also featured some of the greatest instrumentalists of the jazz world, including trumpeters Charlie Shavers and Bunny Berigan, clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, and even drummers Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich.
After reconciling with brother Jimmy in 1945, the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra became a reality once again in 1953. Their appearance on the television series "Stage Show" proved to be a resounding success. Unfortunately, Dorsey passed away in his sleep in 1956. He left behind a lengthy string of beloved hits.
